How to play roulette?

You must try to guess in which pocket the ball will stop. First you have to place your bet(s). Once the time is up, the ball is thrown into the roulette wheel. The ball will eventually come to rest in one of the numbered slots of the wheel. You win if your bet was placed on the right number. This is a very simple game of chance.

There are little tricks to try to maximise your chances of winning.

The different types of bets in Roulette

There are two kinds of bets in Roulette: inside bets and outside bets.

Here are the different inside bets:

  • Straight (1 number): you bet on a single number, by placing your bet directly onto in.
  • Split (2 numbers): place your chip on the line between two numbers, whether its the horizontal or the vertical one.
  • Street (3 numbers): place your chip at the bottom of a number’s column. This bet covers three numbers.
  • Square (4 numbers): place your chip at the intersection between 4 numbers.
  • 6 line (6 numbers): Place your chip on the line at the end of a column. It will cover six numbers (two columns).

Here are the different outside bets:

  • Columns: place your bet on one of these boxes «2 to 1», «1st», «2nd» or «3rd». The zero is not included in these bets.
  • Dozens: place your chips on the boxes « 1 – 12 » – « 13 – 24 » – « 25 – 36 » to cover one of the three dozens.
  • Red / Black: this one is self explanatory. Place your chips on the red or black box. With this bet, you cover all 18 black or red pockets. The zero is not included in this bet.
  • Odds/Evens: Place your chips on the Odd or Even box. It covers all 18 odds or even numbers.
  • Lows / Highs (1-18 / 19-36): This bet covers either the 18 first or the 18 last numbers of the roulette wheel.

You can also find the neighbor bets. This is a system implemented in online casinos to allow players to display a specific bet area. It is oval in shape and will allow you to easily place neighbor and special bets.

#1 – Choosing the good kind of roulette

What are the two most famous kinds of Roulette? There is French Roulette (also called European Roulette) and American Roulette. French Roulette has 36 numbered pockets and one pocket with a single zero (0).

American Roulette has 36 numbered pockets, a single zero (0) and another pocket with a double zero (00). In addition to that the numbers on the wheel are not arranged in the same order.

You can see the differences between American Roulette and French Roulette below.

With its extra pocket, American Roulette allows the house to win more often with about 5.26% chance of winning. Unlike French Roulette, which allows the house to win only 2.7% of the time. American Roulette gives less money back to the players in the long run. The return rate to players in roulette is around 97%.

#2 – The classic Martingale

Martingale is one of the most known techniques. It can allow you to build up your balance little by little. However you will need a rather large bankroll if you string together several losing bets.

The classic Martingale consists in always doubling your previous bet until you win. As soon as you win, you go back to your initial bet.

Let’s take an example: if you bet 5€ on a red square but lose then the next round you will bet 10€ on a red square. If you lose again you bet 20€ on a red square and so on. This technique is repeated until you win. You can easily see why it is expensive.

This technique is prohibited on a lot of online casinos. Do not do this technique with too high a bet, at some casinos a maximum bet amount is put in place.

#3 – The D’Alembert roulette system

This technique can be compared to the Martingale, but its execution is not exactly the same. Here you must always play the same colour. If you lose your bet you must increase your bet by one unit. If you win you must decrease your bet by one unit.

Example

If you bet 10€ on red and black comes up, you lose. You double the unit, i.e. bet 20€ on red. If you lose again, you will have to bet 30€. When you win, you will have to go down one unit, and so on.

#4 – Don’t pay too much attention on the previous rolls

Just because black was the winning number 15 times in the last 25 spins does not mean that red or green will not be next. You should not rely blindly and solely on these statistics. Whatever happens mathematically, if there is a long series of blacks, red will eventually come back to balance the percentage on the long term. This is called the equilibrium law in mathematics.

#5 – Learn to manage your bankroll and know when to stop

This advice may seem obvious to some of you, but make the right decisions. Never go all-in on a colour or a single number because you have just lost multiple spins in a row. It is important to keep your goal in mind. This is a general rule that applies to all casino games. Bet sensibly and thoughtfully. Set your limits and when you reach your goal, stop playing.
